AVG Köln mbh -
Municipal refuse incinerator
![]() | 1/3 | ![]() |

Since refuse contains high levels of energy, no further fuels are needed for the incineration process. This means that the energy released from the waste during the process is recovered as either electricity or steam. Some of this energy has to be retained to supply the machinery on the AVG site. By far the larger part, however, is fed into the local municipal grid where it is sufficient to supply around 100,000 households with energy.
In addition to this, the installation in Cologne is one of the cleanest available. The continuously recorded emission readings are transmitted online and in realtime to the State Environmental Agency, which enables the incinerator to be permanently monitored by an independent watchdog.
The guided tour begins with an introductory video about the installation and the underlying technology and this is followed by a guided tour around the site and to all the machine sections.
