Stadtwerke Herne AG -
Energy park

Energiepark Mont-Cenis is well known not just locally but beyond the Ruhr area. The unusual architecture and supply concept at the training academy for the Ministry of the Interior for North Rhine-Westphalia are outstanding in many ways.
Housed inside the enclosing glass shell of the building is a solar power station. This is the largest roof-mounted installation of its kind in Germany. The roof and facade are not completely covered by the solar panels so natural light is abundant. There are between 98 and 240 solar cells in each module and together they generate twice as much electricity as the academy requires. A high-performance battery storage system at the Energiepark demonstrates for the first time how electricity from renewable sources can be boosted in both value and quality. In addition, the Herne utilities company is a pioneer in the application of pit gas. At the Energiepark Mont-Cenis, it has been operating block-type thermal power stations for years for generating electricity and heat using pit gas.
The guided tour will take the party all around the site and the guide will explain the processes and background behind the conversion of sunlight and pit gas into useful energy.
