Leverkusen – in the industrial heart of Germany
Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, Leverkusen
Approximately 80 million people live in Germany, hosting country of the 2007 TUNZA conference, its biggest city being the capital, Berlin (3.4 million inhabitants). In terms of economics, Germany ranks among the most powerful nations in the world; the currency, as in many other European countries, is the euro (€). For years, ecological issues such as nature conservation, renewable energy sources and energy saving have played an important role in German politics.
Leverkusen, where the TUNZA conference is taking place, is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous of Germany's 16 Federal states with some 18 million inhabitants. In the process of industrialisation in the 19th century, this state around the rivers Rhine and Ruhr became the industrial heart of Germany – and it still is today. Many world-famous companies have their headquarters in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Leverkusen itself is an industrial town in the vicinity of Cologne, and its history is closely linked with that of the Bayer Group. At the end of the 19th century, Bayer settled in Leverkusen and has since then shaped not only the economic but also the social and the cultural life of the city. The TUNZA conference will be held mainly in the Bayer Communication Center, known as BayKomm for short. It provides fascinating insights into today’s research for tomorrow’s world. It features eight exhibition rooms displaying over 300 exhibits, films and information panels
